Switches

Switches for office and warehouse networks are collected here. The range goes from 24 port gigabit and PoE units to a 28 port 10G layer 3 switch, with brands including Ubiquiti, Netgear, Intellinet and Signamax.

Choose a PoE switch to power IP phones, access points and cameras over one cable. Managed models add VLANs, useful for keeping voice traffic separate from data. Check port count and PoE budget against your device list. KX-TD can help at (866) 205-4112.

Before you order

  • Count your ports. Choose enough ports for every device, with a few spare.
  • Check PoE power. PoE switches list a total power budget, such as 150W or 240W, so add up your devices.
  • Choose managed or unmanaged. Unmanaged switches need no setup. Managed switches add VLANs and monitoring.
  • Not sure? Send your device list and we will help.

Switches buying guide

Unmanaged switches

Unmanaged switches from Netgear, Intellinet and Grandstream come in 5, 8, 16 and 24 port models. They work out of the box with no setup. Check for gigabit ports if you use modern computers, IP phones or access points, since slower ports can limit them. Match port speed to your devices.

Managed and smart switches

Ubiquiti, Linksys, Netgear, EnGenius and Signamax list managed models with VLANs and monitoring. VoIP setups often use VLANs to keep phone traffic apart from data. Choose managed if you need that control, or if you want to watch ports remotely.

PoE switches

PoE switches power phones, access points and cameras. The total power budget is shared across ports, so add the wattage of each device. PoE+ ports deliver more power per port, which suits outdoor access points and some phones. Ask us if you need help adding up the power budget.

Uplinks and rack mounting

Many larger switches add SFP or SFP+ ports for fiber uplinks to other switches. Rack mount models take 1U of space or more. Check mount kits, such as the Ubiquiti G2 accessory, and power modules, such as the Netgear 150W module.

Common questions

What is a PoE budget?

It is the total watts the switch can deliver to all its ports at once.

Do I need gigabit?

For most offices, yes. Gigabit ports suit current phones, computers and access points.

What is an SFP port?

It is a slot for a fiber or copper module, used for uplinks to other switches.
